Company Profile - Bates Mining Specialists

Bates Mining Specialists (Pty) Ltd is a manufacturing organisation specialising in the supply of products to the Mining Industry. The company was established in 1992. The company is a medium sized organisation, turnover in 2009 financial year is anticipated to be around R40 million and has around 60 employees in total.

The company is controlled by a board of four directors who also hold all of the shares in the company. The directors are:

  • Elaine Smith – Managing Director,
  • Sid Staniforth,
  • Raymond Tinta and
  • Barry Smith.

The company is a Black Empowered organisation, in a deal funded by Harmony Gold Mining Company in 2003. Raymond Tinta acquired 26% of the shareholding in the company.

The company holds substantial contracts and agreements with many of the major mining houses, which include:

  • Anglo Gold Ashanti,
  • Anglo Platinum,
  • Harmony Gold Mine,
  • Impala Platinum,
  • Lonmin,
  • Goldfields,
  • First Uranium and
  • Barplats.

The company comprises two divisions approximately equal in size, in terms of turnover. The one division consists of four major extrusion lines producing thick walled pipe for the manufacture of Blast Barricades. The Blast Barricades are assembled and supplied to various mining houses.

The other division is involved in the fabrication and assembly of a wide range of products which include:

  • Signalling devices,
  • Hopper couplers and pins,
  • Mono rope pulley systems,
  • Various types of ladders,
  • Signage,
  • Mud lashing bags and many other products which are listed on our website and included in our brochure.

The company has recently implemented a quality management system in line with the requirements of I.S.O. 9001.
